The Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center (FNMOC) serves the primary mission to provide the highest quality, most relevant, and timely worldwide meteorology and oceanography support to U.S. and coalition forces from their 24X7 Operations Center.

Fleet Numerical provides support with High Performance Computing (HPC) at all levels of classification, the only facility modeling the Global Atmosphere to Department of Defense (DoD) Information Assurance Standards, provides climatologically support to Naval Operations, and executes Submarine Weather support.

Fleet Numerical is composed of a world-class team of dedicated military and civilian personnel. The team consists of renowned experts in meteorology, oceanography, computer science, and Fleet operations. The team's efforts provide computerized weather and ocean prediction products, weather satellite imagery products and related tactical decision aids and data, supporting virtually every combat platform and weapons system operated by the U.S. Navy.

Mission

Fleet Numerical is a world class Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) facility enabling fleet safety and decision superiority.

History

In 1958, the Navy Numerical Weather Problems (NANWEP) group was established in Suitland, MD. NANWEP was later moved to Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in 1959. Fleet Numerical Weather Facility was established in 1961. In 1974, Fleet Numerical Weather Facility moved from NPS to its current location. In 1993, the current title Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center (FNMOC) was adopted. In 2005, Fleet Numerical was realigned under Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command (NMOC). In 2008, Fleet Numerical was assigned the mission of 24X7 Global Submarine Weather Support (SUBWEAX). In 2011, Fleet Numerical celebrated 50years of supercomputing excellence of Fleet safety and Warfighter decision superiority with the completion of a new Computer Operations Center.

Fleet Numerical is the DoD's primary central production site for worldwide computer-generated operational meteorological and oceanographic analysis and forecast products.

Organization

FNMOC is an echelon IV command aligned under the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command (NMOC) and a service provider of U.S. Fleet Forces. FNMOC is co-located with Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) Marine Meteorology Division, a representation of successful transition of research into operations. FNMOC maintains close ties with the nearby Naval Postgraduate School (NPS).
